Andrea S. Downing

PhD, Research Fellow

Andrea’s interests lie in understanding the roles of local processes in global sustainable development and identifying leverage points for change. Andrea is currently working on the project titled "Financial Dimensions of a Key Climate System Wild Card: the Atmospheric Brown Cloud over South Asia" led by GEDB  Executive Director Beatrice Crona. Their goal is to identify key financial actors in the value chains of sectors that contribute black carbon emissions to the Atmospheric Brown Cloud.

Andrea has a background in ecology. Her more recent work, building on analyses of the Planetary Boundaries concept, has mostly focused on the cross-scale and differentiated dynamics of (un-)sustainable development at sub-global levels. Her PhD thesis, completed in 2012, centered on drivers of change in Lake Victoria’s ecosystem and social-ecological system.
