Finding novel ways to leverage the power of the financial sector to ensure biosphere integrity and deal with systemic climate risk.

News

Closing date: June 15th, 2021

Are you interested in working at the interphase of climate, sustainability and finance? DO you want to do science that can make direct contributions to societal change? Join us to help develop novel ways of addressing pressing sustainability challenges by combining research on sustainability, Earth system science and finance. You will be working at the Global Economic Dynamics and the Biosphere within the Biosphere Finance research theme, in close collaboration with colleagues at the Stockholm Resilience Centre and as part of an extended group contributing to the new Sustainable Finance Lab.

Specifically, the work will include i) new ways of accounting for and incorporating sustainability risks in financial decision-making frameworks; ii) evaluating the contribution of current ESG rating to global climate stability; iii) working in a team to develop new metrics to account for earth system impacts of financial investments.

A successful candidate will have experience with/or demonstrated interest in aspects relating to financial investments. This could include (but is not limited to) work on ESG metrics and development, asset class development, investment portfolio management, to name a few. A successful candidate is also likely to have experience with/interest in multiple aspects of global environmental change, including e.g. climate change, hydrological flows, biodiversity and/or deforestation and land-use change.

A key aspect of the research will be to explore novel ways of linking the dynamics of the global environment (beyond just green-house gas emissions) to capital markets. It will also entail identifying key financial system leverage points for stewardship/intervention.

Additional qualification requirements and selection

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a track record in research, including publications, related to sustainability and/or economics. Applicants who can demonstrate an engagement in several fields, or other interdisciplinary experience, will be prioritized. Demonstrated experience in working with financial data, or large global data sets and models will be prioritized.

The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on:

  • experience working with specified topics (finance, sustainability, Earth system science)
  • experience/demonstrated interest in conducting interdisciplinary research
  • demonstrated academic outputs in the form of scientific publications
  • the applicants personal references
  • willingness and ability to work as part of a transdisciplinary team
  • communication and presentation skills

About Global Economic Dynamics and the Biosphere Program (GEDB)

GEDB is an Academy research programme at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. We address the economic dynamics of global change and its implications for a sustainable future, and we are funded by the Erling-Persson Family Foundation. Our mission is to perform science for change through frontier interdisciplinary research in largely unexplored areas – searching for critical connections, causalities and new discoveries and at the same time engaging with relevant stakeholders and actors in new forms of collaboration for concrete action. But always with cutting-edge science as our primary ambition.

About the Sustainable Finance Lab (SFL)

SFL is a new center (launching in June 2021) to deliver research that can help transform capital markets towards sustainability. It is a transdisciplinary platform for engagement and dialogue between researchers, agencies and industry. The six core academic consortia members include: KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm Resilience Center and Global Economic Dynamics and the Biosphere, Stockholm School of Economics Institute for Research, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Luleå University of Technology, and Gotherburg University.
