Fishery Improvement Projects Workshop: Strategies, Successes, and the Future of FIPs

This is the final report from the Fishery Improvement Projects Workshop: Strategies, Successes, and the Future of FIPs.

The report is based on the key research findings for the project Supply Chain Strategies for Transforming to Sustainable Fisheries funded by the Swedish Research Council Formas and hosted at the Global Economic Dynamics and the Biosphere Program of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

The aim of the project is to understand the potential and challenges for Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) as pathways towards more sustainable fisheries. Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) are a form of private governance aiming to improve fisheries' sustainability. They help bring together stakeholders along the supply chain, and provide a strategic plan to improve fishing practices or encourage a policy change. As the demand for sustainable seafood rises, FIPs are becoming a dominant feature on the global seafood landscape

This report is divided in two main sections:

-    Background report: this section presents the first global systematic description of FIP governance processes by examining reported actions, the actors involved, and their achievements in terms of policy and practice outputs, based on a sample of 107 FIPs. The material in this report is based on published and unpublished scientific material.

-    Workshop synthesis: this section synthesizes the discussion held on November 30, 2021 during the online workshop: Fishery Improvement Projects: Strategies, Successes, and the Future of FIPs. Participants included FIP leads and stakeholders from all over the world, representing both small organizations and renowned names in the FIP community.
