New professor in sustainability science

GEDB Executive director Beatrice Crona is appointed a newly established professorship in sustainability science with focus on sustainable food systems.

The position is placed at the Department of Environmental Science at Stockholm University, but Professor Crona will be on leave from the department to lead GEDB as well as to work at Stockholm Resilience Centre, where she is deputy science director.

The company Gullspång Invest and its subsidiary Gullspång Re:food have together with the IKEA Foundation funded the establishment of a professorship in Sustainability Science, with a focus on Sustainable Food Systems.

Crona has extensive experience within oceans and fisheries governance, and is co-chair of the Blue Food Assessment, an international joint initiative bringing together over 100 scientists from more than 25 institutions. Her work will focus on exploring and further developing the knowledge required to work towards a sustainable food system, particularly on aquatic food.

“When we talk about transforming our food systems we tend to focus on land-based aspects of them. But we need to consider everything connected to our lakes, rivers and oceans too. Aquatic foods offer great untapped potential for providing more sustainable diets,” she says adding. “I am both proud and delighted for about this opportunity.”
